The Soul of Bravo

A year of national reckonings on race and inequality has tested how real the Housewives should be.

In 2020, Reba Bonaparte considered work opportunities. Bravo had been pursuing a hospitality executive for years trying to get her to join the cast of Southern Charms. The series, which premiered in 2014, featured a group of Gentil degenerates living in Charleston, South Carolina. For many seasons, the central tension has been the romance between Thomas Lovenell, a former accountant from South Carolina who resigned after being indicted on drug charges, and the mother of his 21-year-old girlfriend and his two children, Catherine Calhoun Dennis. (It’s Calhoun, like John C. Calhoun, vice president of slavery in the United States.) Dennis and Lovenell were drawn to each other in a way that they felt was real but dangerous. Like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, it is plausible that they would have a happy ending or die at each other’s hands. Along with the show’s other stars, Dennis and Lovenell played polo and sipped rosé from a pint glass while dressed in brick-colored shorts embroidered with the creature. This activity often take place on the ancestral plantations of the cast, but sometimes the non-decadent Bonaparte comes into Bonaparte’s restaurants.

But when Bonaparte’s debut season began filming last February, she found herself in the role of educator rather than a reality star. In her scenes, filmed especially in the months following the police killing of George Floyd, she is asked to explain racism to her white castmates. Bonaparte, who is Persian and whose husband and son are black, trys to get Dennis to understand what it means for a statue of John C. Calhoun to be toppled, and explains why it was wrong for Dennis to send monkey emojis to black activists in the battle over Instagram DM.

“It was hard,” Bonaparte told me of those efforts. “I started to feel a little gaslight. “Oh, this is a new person bullying Catherine. The emotion I got from a lot of people was, “You came to the show and ruined it for me!” Was. Even though Southern Charm had previously taken up Dennis and Cover’s substance abuse issues and Dennis and Lovenell’s tortured custody battle, did viewers mean the light show was an inappropriate venue for serious issues, or did Bonaparte ruin the fun by making it impossible to ignore racism, the reality of the past and present? I found it exhausting,” says Bonaparte. “I just wanted them to be conscious and say, ‘That’s part of my history, it’s part of American history.’ And I want to do everything possible to make amends.

Before last year, Bravo didn’t seem particularly interested in hiring someone who could have a nuanced conversation about inequality. The network’s reality show featured at-be silly people behaving badly, but they did so with what the network’s frontman, Andy Cohen, called “Bravo Wink”: an edit that informs viewers that what’s going on is ridiculous, not an explicit reprimand. This could be anything from a montage highlighting hypocrisy to the remaining shots of one cast member soberly soting wine as her co-stars drunkenly rolled around on the grass or threw flutes. As we enjoyed the on-screen chaos, viewers were comfortable with passive observers, safe and un-broken wine glasses.

Recently, however, many fans have begun to question who deserves access to the Bravo platform. It’s no longer enough for Bravo to wink at viewers. To be successful, the network and its stars need to understand how to make good TELEVISION in the sense that it can be watched, but not only is it good in the sense that it is ethical, but at least not so obviously bad. So what does television’s smallest, stupidest, most dramatic network look like when it grows its conscience.

The truth is there is no rule book,” Cohen tells me through a video screen dressed in tie-dye at his West Village co-op. Like other hosts in late night, Cohen temporarily had to watch what happens on his talk show, Live, and shoot remotely, and he’s first lighting a candle and then hitting the game as a shift around his home studio that seems to have something to do with his hands. “Everything is a case-by-case situation. The goalposts are always on the move.

Despite knowing the cast members for years, his baby shower was hosted by five Real Housewives, including two who would then leave the network – Cohen, who seems to be able to compartmentalize the star’s dual roles as fallable humans and TV characters essential to his show, much of his executive production. He is an executive who has turned on his on-screen talent, providing Bravo with something between J.K. Rowling’s world-building micromanberging and The Great Oz and the powerful Perceived Almighty of Oz. Cohen says that in relation to the cast, his role encompasses “friends, enemies, bosses, allies, fathers and boyfriends.”

“At the end of the day, it’s the cheerleaders that I have the most. Because the truth of the matter is that I want each of them to succeed. If each succeeds, it is a success for me. Believe me. Otherwise, it’s more of a problem for me because we have to find something new.

The Real Housewives debuted 15 years ago as a voyeur trip past the guard booth of Gate Orange County Community Kotodekaza. Re-watching the early seasons, which were directed by the current executive vice president of programming Shari Levine, they feel like Lauren Greenfield movies documenting a bright, recession-rich life. After the market crashed, the show went bigger, more interesting and campy to make up for the richness they no longer necessarily showed. Bravo, best known before the mid-2000s for recasting Inside the Actors Studios and niche films, handed them over to the housewives themselves, expanded from west to east with the Real Housewives of New York, and headed to the Real Housewives of Atlanta. The casting requirements remained the same: having enough money to look rich (a common insult is to blame the person renting her mansion), and having enough personality to incite confrontation with other women. And the rules of engagement quickly developed. You can go after someone’s parenting, but their child can’t. Unless you are willing to scrutinize your own drinking, you can question someone’s motives, but not the consumption of boos. You can throw a glass or a table, but only if someone despises you, for example, by implying without evidence that your husband is cheating on you.

The Real Housewives of Nashville

Jana Kramer is not part of The Real Housewives of Nashville – but she’s not saying no to reality TV.

With the latest episode of her and her husband’s podcast, Winne Down and Jana Kramer and Michael Corsin, an exclusive sneak peek of People, the One Tree Hill alum explains that she was asked to film for the Real Housewives of Nashville but declined “three times.”

“The only reason I enjoyed it with Teddy [Mellencamp Alloyave] is because it might be fun to be someone’s sidekick, a fun sidekick,” Kramer said, noting that he had previously considered being a “friend” to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ MellenCamp Alloave.

Kramer, 37, said, “When they were trying to cast the Real Housewives of Nashville and they were interested in me as one of the characters I didn’t like girl drama, I didn’t want to be a part of it, I don’t want to eat into it.

Jana Kramer explains decision to have breast surgery: ‘I’m doing the right thing for me’

The Bravo housewives franchise may not be for her, but the star says she and Cosin, 34, are open to joining the reality series and have filmed presentations for their own shows.

“We’re not saying no to reality TV, I know a lot of people asked us to do a reality show, it’s about what kind of show it is because it wasn’t like I would attack a girl,” the country singer says. “I know they come in and look at our marriage and you know the ins and outs and how we work through it, but you’re still doing drama.

“So it’s a presentation where we shoot something and we don’t know if it’s going to be taken up, and we know we’re sharing podcasts and so much here, so if we really do, we don’t even know if it’s something at the end of the day, but sometimes it’s a kiss of death,” Kramer adds. ‘I’m scared, so I have to think about it and be careful.’

Kramer points out that she and Kosin are “fine” sharing their fights on the podcast, but worry that things will be well edited on the reality show.

“All of us are like, ‘Yes, we have a problem, no, it’s not perfect, but this is how we’re getting through it’, and I’m not sure they’ll show the ‘this is how we’re getting through it’ aspect,” the mom-of-two says. I don’t want to read more because I’m already fed up with comments on how much is a train wreck.

As for how to proceed with the shoot, Kosin said he struggled to pretend that the camera didn’t exist.

“When we were filming, I kept asking producers and photographers if they could turn it into mockumentary, so I started seeing cameras like Jim in the office,” the former NFL player says. “I kept doing it and they didn’t have it.

When the crew tried to film the fight between the couple, Kramer says that even though she “kept poking at him,” it didn’t go according to plan because he answered with only love and kindness, not how he acted during a typical argument.

“I felt that way and this is what we’re doing and it was fun, feeling like the cameras were here while we were doing this fight,” she says. “But if he pretends to be a saint in conversation, I’m not doing it!”

After part of the drama went down on the latest season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi Burruss still doesn’t know where her relationship stands with castmate Porsha Williams.

In a chat with host Janine Rubenstein on Thursday’s episode of the PEOPLE daily podcast, Burruss, 44, says there was “a lot of disagreement” during the recently wrapped 13th season, some of which will be discussed in the first part of Sunday’s three-part reunion.

“Everyone knows, ‘Did we have a threesome while we were traveling, or was there a threesome in the house?’ ‘She’s referring to Cynthia Bailey’s dungeon-themed bachelorette party and surrounding speculation about one or more of the cast sleeping with exotic dancer Burnuss hired for the occasion.

During the reunion, they also “talk about a lot of the drama between Porsha and Kenya Moore,” Burruss adds of their castmate, namely Williams, 39, who made the claim that “someone screwed the stripper” during the February episode.

The Real Housewives of Miami

The Real Housewives of Miami (RHOM for short) is an American reality TV series that originally aired on Bravo from February 22 to November 14, 2011. Developed as the seventh installment of the Real Housewives franchise, following The Real Housewives of Orange County, New York City, Atlanta, New Jersey, D.C., and Beverly Hills, it first aired for three seasons and focused on the personal and professional lives of several women living in Miami, Florida. In February 2021, it was confirmed that the series would reboot on Peacock.

The series originally focused on Lee Black, Adriana de Moura, Alexia Echevarria, Marysol Patton, Larsa Pippen and Christy Rice. Other appearances include Lisa Hochstein, Joanna Krupa, Ana Quincoces and Current Sierra.

On March 10, 2010, Bravo announced that the Miami Social Club series had been featured as a restructuring of the 2009 series, Miami Social. After filming was complete, Bravo decided to make it an instalment of the network’s Real Housewives franchise. The first season premiered on February 22, 2011 and starred Lee Black, Adriana de Moura, Alexia Echevarria, Marysol Patton, Larsa Pippen and Christy Rice. Pippen and Rice left after the first season.

Lisa Hochstein, Joanna Krupa, Current Sierra and Ana Quincos are added to the cast of the second season, which premiered on September 13, 2012. Echevarria was demoted in a recurring role to spend much of his time caring for his son, who was injured in a car crash in 2011.

The third season debuted on August 12, 2013, and Echevarria returned as a full-time housewife. Patton and Quincos were repeatedly relegated to ability. Sierra appeared as a guest. By September 2016, Bravo said The Real Housewives of Miami was “over” and ended the franchise second after D.C’s The Real Housewives was canceled in 2010 after one season.

In November 2020, Real Housewives executive producer Andy Cohen said there had been talks to return the show for a fourth season on streaming service Peacock. In February 2021, the series was confirmed to return.

Reality series have been criticized for promoting consumerism through programming. It is also seen as perpetuating gender stereotypes by highlighting women more as shoppers than career women. Their lavish lifestyle also contributes to the misconception that financial wealth equals happiness. [Citation needed] feminist leader Gloria Steinem has vociferously criticized the “Housewives” franchise for “giving women rich, spoiled, dependent and hateful each other.” Steinem summed up her distaste for the show in 2013:

‘It’s an incredible amount of money spent, being a woman, not getting along with each other with all the dress-ups and inflatables, plastic surgery and fake boredom.’ Fight each other. It is a minstrel show for women. I don’t believe it, I must say. I feel like they’ve been manufactured, that the fights between them are going to be manufactured and they’re supposed to chase each other in a kind of conflicting way.

The New York Times published an article in October 2019 criticizing how the cast of the different Housewives franchises are “separated” by their skin color. Author Tracy Egan Morrissey points to potomac and Atlanta for an almost entirely African-American cast, while other iterations (Beverly Hills, Orange County, Dallas, New York and New Jersey) are overwhelmingly white, with few women of color. The Real Housewives of New York didn’t have an African-American cast until 2021, but in 2019 she joined Dallas with Carly Brittingham, having become the show’s first Hispanic cast member. Beverly Hills featured a “racially homogeneous cast throughout its run” until the addition of Garcell Beauvais in 2019, with the exception of Joyce Girot in Season 4.

Overview and Casting

The series documents the lives of six Greek women. The show aired in the midst of the Greek government debt crisis and faced criticism for the tone of life in luxury during tough economic times. Writing after the show was canceled, the New York Times commented that the show “barely lasted a season, and it doesn’t take long to see why.” The Greek adaptation had a keynote of depression that may have matched the public mood but did not provide viewers with a frothy escapism kick. Wealthy Greeks have not recently flaunted their lifestyle.
